Shipped away young man
To some strange foreign land
The ale they serve is warmer than my hand
The tongue they speak
Is good as gibberish to me
But I reckon that it beats killing in Vietnam
I got this young Fraulein
And Lord, she's easy on the eyes
But we don't talk much, she helps to pass my time
Oh, but when I sleep
Charlene, you fill my dreams
You come to me an angel in the night
Charlene I swear to you, you will see my face again
Sure as sweet is well-water, we have not seen our end
No mountain nor no man, between us will they stand
Oh you will see me again
I heard he gave you a ring
And I can'r blame him for a thing
But there ain't no vows and I'm home on forever leave
So, before you carry on
I've come back across the pond
To ask the fairest Tiller girl to marry me
Charlene I swear to you, you will see my face again
Come hell or high-water, we have not seen our end
No mountain nor no man, between us will they stand
Oh you will see me again

We both know that I ain't fooling no one
I can't even fool myself
I ain't quite sure just what I'm looking for
But life inside this war is hell
Can't seem to piece my head together
As it lay scattered on the ground
I've hid my heart atop the highest point above
Look out below, I'm coming down
Spirit, I'm tired of holding on
Spirit, I can't hide you from the sun
I'm a slave to my mind
Bound by chains forged in time
The taller your walls, the harder you'll fall
Can't live no other life but mine
Spirit, I'm tired of holding on
Spirit, I can't hide you from the sun
I want to let go, I don't want to hurt no more
I want to let go
I want to let go, I don't want to hurt no more
I want to let go
I want to let go, I don't want to hurt no more
I want to let go
I want to let go, I don't want to hurt no more
I want to let go
Spirit, I'm tired of holding on
Spirit, I can't hide you from the sun
Spirit, I'm tired of holding on
Spirit, I can't hide you from the sun

Pa worked the steel mill after his days in the mines
Carried my sister, mother and me on shoulders made of granite and lime
Sixteen hour, midnight-turn, foreman on the floor
Ann and me, we'd rest easy when we heard him walk back through the screen door
Ma'd always pray before she'd bed down in her quilts
She'd fix him up with whatever crumbs and a Bible verse stuffed in his lunch pale
He took every shift that he could wrap his hands around
Because his way to keep the wolves away was to cut their tongues out before they howl
Grind till' the end of your days, like somebody's coming to take it away
Don'r waste your precious time, don't sit around, don'r wait to die
Grind till' the end of your life, lay it all out, leave nothing behind
Rest not too easy in bed, there'll be time for sleeping when you're dead
Grind till' the end of your days, like somebody's coming to take it away
Don'r waste your precious time, don't sit around, don'r wait to die
Grind till' the end of your life, lay it all out, leave nothing behind
Rest not too easy in bed, there'll be time for sleeping when you're dead

I have lived a life of sorrow
I've struggled through many days of pain
Ain't felt her warmth on a winter morning
Since she left me drowning in my shame
I'm a lying man of my word
Drunken love is sober sin
This life of lies sent her walking
Into the arms of another man
On deaf ears my prayers have fallen
And there's no one to hear me cry
A broken soul, a dead man walking
But ain't no room for me in the sky
I sit and stare at an empty closet
Where all her robes, they used to hang
A hollow hole and doors left open
Seems it and me are one in the same
I stand over my empty vessel
Black liquor bag tied over his eyes
Prescription sleep in his left hand
Shell of relief landed to his right
On deaf ears my prayers have fallen
And there's no one to hear me cry
In my last hour, I've finally broken
But ain't no room for me in the sky
Ain't no room for me in the sky
